Some bank lines have no invoice or bill behind them yet, such as bank charges, rent paid by standing order or a payment you haven't recorded. In Bank Reconciliation these show as Unmatched. You can settle each one without leaving the page.

              Open the line

              1. Go to Banking → Bank Reconciliation.
              2. Use Status → Needs review to list the lines waiting for you.
              3. Click a line, or its Resolve button, to open it.

The panel shows the line's description, date and amount, with tabs for each way to settle it: Match, Create journal, Smart Uploads, Create invoice, Split and Ignore.

              Choose how to settle it

              • Search your books — on the Match tab, click Search books to find an open invoice, bill or journal entry the matcher missed, then match it.
              • Book it to a ledger — on the Match tab, under Or book it to a ledger, pick the Ledger, add an optional Narration and click Assign ledger. If SmartLedger has seen similar lines before, it shows a Suggested ledger. You can also pick a ledger straight from the Account / Match column of an unmatched row.
              • Create the invoice or journal — Create invoice opens a sales invoice form for money in, or a purchase invoice form for money out. Create journal opens a journal entry form. The form is filled in with the line's date, amount and reference, and the new document is linked to the line when you save it.
              • Upload the invoice — on the Smart Uploads tab, click Upload the purchase invoice (or sales invoice) and choose the PDF or image. SmartLedger reads it, you check it against the line, and Approve & match books it and matches it to the line.
              • Split it — on the Split tab, spread the amount over several ledgers, for example a salary batch. Add rows with Add a line, enter each ledger and amount until it reads Fully allocated, then click Apply split.
              • Ignore it — on the Ignore tab, pick a reason (Personal, Internal transfer, Duplicate, Recorded elsewhere or Other), add a note and click Ignore line. An ignored line is left out of every total and never matched again. You can restore it later.

A line booked to a ledger or split shows Matched and still needs one more step. Click Create journal entry on its row to post it to your books.

Work on many lines at once

Tick the lines you want. To take every line that fits your filters, tick the whole page and click the Select all link in the bar. The bar that appears offers Accept AI, Set ledger, Ignore, Delete, Post to books and Review. Each one shows which lines it will take and skip before anything runs.

              Tips

              • Click Save as rule on a line to turn what you did into a matching rule, so similar lines are handled for you next time.
              • If a ledger doesn't exist yet, type its name in the ledger list and choose Create ledger.
              • When money goes out and comes back, such as a bounced cheque, the line reads Money came back: decide the pair. Click it to set both lines aside together, or say they aren't a return and match each one normally.
