The GST Summary is the first page of the GST section. It shows where each return stands for the financial year, what falls due next, how much cash GSTR-3B is likely to need and how much input tax credit (ITC) is at risk. Each panel links to the screen where you do the work.
Before you start
- Add your company's GSTIN in your company settings. Returns are filed against a GSTIN, so most of this page needs one.
- The GST screens are part of the Pro plan. On other plans you see an upgrade screen instead.
Open the summary
- Click GST in the main menu.
- Click Summary.
The header shows the financial year, your GSTIN, your taxpayer type and whether you file Monthly or Quarterly (QRMP). On the right you see either GST Portal: Connected with the time left in the session, or a Connect GST Portal button.
If you are just starting
Until SmartLedger has a filing history or a first return for your company, the page shows a Set up GST checklist instead of the dashboard:
- Add the GSTIN — shows as GSTIN verified once the company has one.
- Sales invoices synced — your sales invoices feed GSTR-1.
- Connect GST portal — one OTP, needed to save and file returns from SmartLedger.
- Import filing history — brings in returns and ARNs you filed elsewhere.
- Start the first return — click Start GSTR-1 to open GSTR-1 for the current period.
What the dashboard shows
- Compliance score — a score out of 100 based on on-time filing, GSTR-1 data quality, ITC reconciliation, the portal connection and how far ahead of the next due date you are. Click How it's calculated for the breakdown. The figures beside it (Filed on time, Due this month, Blocking errors and ITC at risk) each open their own detail. It is a prompt for action, not a government rating.
- Filing status — a month-by-month grid of GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B: Filed, Due / draft, Blocked, Upcoming, Overdue or Not counted. Click a month to open that return, or click the year in the title to switch financial year. Click Check against the GST portal (later, the Checked on the GST portal link) to read the portal's filing record, so returns filed outside SmartLedger are counted.
- Alerts — what needs action, most urgent first, such as overdue returns, invoices the portal would reject or unmatched purchases. Each alert has a button that takes you to the fix.
- Due dates — returns due in the next 45 days. Click Show all to see 90 days.
- Cash & credit — the cash you are likely to pay with this period's GSTR-3B after ITC. Until you reconcile, the credit comes from your books. After reconciliation it is split into ITC safe to claim and ITC at risk. Click Show trend and breakdown for the monthly tax trend and the GSTR-2B match summary.
- Return cards — one card each for GSTR-1, GSTR-3B, GST Reconciliation, E-Way Bills and GSTR-9, showing its status and a button such as Start, Continue, View, Reconcile, Manage or Prepare.
Tips
- The summary doesn't file anything itself. GSTR-1, GSTR-3B and GSTR-9 are filed directly on the GST portal from their own screens.
- A GSTR-3B month shows as Blocked until GSTR-1 for that month is filed, because GSTN fills GSTR-3B's liability from GSTR-1.
- After the due date a late fee of ₹50 a day (₹20 for a nil return) applies, so deal with red alerts first.
